The Sovereign Military Order of Malta is pleased to announce the issuance of a special commemorative stamp by our Grand Magistry in Rome, celebrating 850 years since the establishment of our first priory in Ireland.

As one of Ireland’s longest-established charities, the Order’s legacy dates back to 1174, when our first Priory at Kilmainham, at the site of what is now the Royal Hospital, was founded with the support of Richard de Clare, Earl of Pembroke. This marked the beginning of the Order’s mission on the island, rooted in caring for the sick, the poor, and the vulnerable.

This commemorative stamp symbolises not only the Order’s remarkable history but also its enduring commitment to compassion and humanitarian service. From its beginnings in medieval Ireland to its role today as a modern, vibrant charitable organisation, the Order of Malta continues to stand as a beacon of dignity and care, making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

The commemorative stamp is now available, allowing supporters to participate in this historic occasion and contribute to the ongoing mission of the Order.
