January 24, 2025The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, renowned for its motto “tuitio fidei et obsequium pauperum” (defense of the faith and service to the poor), boasts a rich history in Ireland. Founded in Kilmainham in 1174, the Irish Priory flourished until its suppression in 1534. Today, the Irish Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta carries on the Order’s legacy, serving the people of Ireland through its knights, dames, and dedicated volunteers.
To commemorate this momentous 850th anniversary, a special commemorative stamp has been issued by the Grand Priory in Rome. This unique stamp, which is now available for purchase, celebrates the Order’s enduring legacy in Ireland, from its humble beginnings in Kilmainham to its continued service across the Island today.
