The Order of Malta Ambulance Corps’ Westport Unit was celebrated at the Mayo People of the Year Awards on Friday, 15th November, in recognition of their remarkable commitment to providing continuous first aid services and compassionate care to the community over the past 81 years. This prestigious award honors the unwavering dedication of the unit, which has become a vital part of Mayo life, supporting those in need with professionalism and kindness.
Throughout its long history, the Westport Unit has provided essential first aid coverage at major events, most notably on Reek Sunday each year, when thousands of pilgrims ascend Croagh Patrick. This ongoing commitment to community safety and care has earned them deep respect and appreciation from locals and visitors alike.
Earlier this year, after criminal damage to their training facility, the Westport community rallied around the unit, helping with repairs and cleanup efforts to restore their headquarters. This richly deserved award symbolises a heartfelt acknowledgment from the community for the Ambulance Corps’ continued service and resilience, especially in times of challenge.
Celebrating its 30th year, the Mayo People of the Year Awards—organised by Mayo Rehab, Mayo County Council, and The Connaught Telegraph—recognises individuals and organisations across County Mayo who have made exceptional contributions to their communities.
Congratulations to the Westport Unit for this well-deserved recognition and for their tireless dedication to saving lives, touching hearts, and supporting the people of Mayo.
