October 30, 2024Dublin, Ireland – 07.10.2024:
The Order of Malta Ireland successfully hosted its National Competition in Portlaoise last weekend, drawing participation from units across the country and beyond. The event was a celebration of excellence and camaraderie, with competitors showcasing a very high standard of professional first aid and emergency medical skills.
This year’s competition was particularly special as the Order of Malta Ireland welcomed teams from Poland and Ukraine. These teams not only competed at an impressive level but also took the opportunity to engage in advanced upskilling sessions on emergency medical aid training, facilitated by experienced Irish trainers.
The longstanding relationship between the Irish and Polish branches of the Order of Malta dates back several decades, fostering mutual cooperation and the sharing of best practices in emergency response. The Ukrainian team’s participation, facilitated through ongoing collaboration and support, was a testament to the resilience and dedication of our Ukrainian colleagues during these challenging times. Ukrainian Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Gerasko Larysa met the visiting units and expressed appreciation for the support extended by the Order of Malta to the Ukrainian unit and their broader community.
Order of Malta Ireland has actively supported its Polish and Ukrainian counterparts, with Irish units travelling abroad in recent months to assist with the humanitarian response to the ongoing refugee crisis. Our volunteers have worked at Polish points of entry, providing critical aid to those fleeing conflict and in need of medical care. Similarly, at the request of Irish authorities, our teams have been present at Dublin Airport, ensuring the safety and well-being of refugees arriving into Ireland and providing necessary support and assistance as required.
Cmdr. Brian Coote, National Director, Order of Malta Ambulance Corp commented on the weekend’s event:
“The National Competition is not only an opportunity for our volunteers to demonstrate their exceptional skills but also a moment to strengthen the bonds of friendship and collaboration with our international colleagues. The presence of teams from Poland and Ukraine, and the support we have been able to provide in return, exemplifies the true spirit of the Order of Malta – ‘Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum’ – upholding the faith and serving the vulnerable. We remain committed to standing by our fellow volunteers and all those in need, both at home and abroad.”
The Order of Malta looks forward to further building on these relationships, continuing to provide support and expertise where needed, and enhancing the professional development of all its members through such events.
