On Tuesday, December 10th, a truly extraordinary event unfolded at the Order of Malta Hospital in Djougou in northern Benin.

A young mother safely delivered quintuplets – four girls and a boy – thanks to the skilled hands and dedication of the hospital’s medical team.

This significant medical milestone moment is one that will forever remain in the hearts and minds of all involved.

Born at an average weight of 1.5 kg, the quintuplets are receiving expert care in the hospital’s neonatology department, where their condition is stable. The mother, referred by a partner agency due to the complexity of her pregnancy, chose the Order of Malta Hospital for its renowned expertise. The delivery, scheduled for the 36th week of pregnancy, was performed via cesarean section under the leadership of Dr. Gani, alongside an exceptional team including nurse anesthesiologist Mr. Guézo and operating room nurse Mr. Avosse.

This seamless and successful delivery was made possible by the collective dedication of the entire team, who worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of the mother and her five newborns.

Providing Immediate Support to Mother and Babies

Recognising the unique challenges faced by the family, the Order of Malta stepped in to cover the majority of the medical expenses and provided essential items for the babies’ care. This compassionate support reflects the hospital’s commitment to serving vulnerable communities and ensuring dignity and care for all.

The exceptional nature of this birth drew widespread attention, with visits from local dignitaries a delegation from the Ministry of Health. Their presence highlighted the significance of the hospital’s role in providing critical healthcare services in the region.

A Message of Congratulations

Our colleagues in the Order of Malta France, which manages the Djougou Hospital, has extended its warmest congratulations to the courageous young mother and the dedicated caregivers who made this remarkable birth possible. Here in Ireland, we also join in celebrating this joyous occasion and send our warmest wishes to the mother and her quintuplets.

This inspiring story is a testament to the life-saving work of the Order of Malta and the profound impact of its mission to serve those in need.
