Order of Malta Welcomes An Post Commemorative Stamp Honouring Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty
January 22, 2026The Board and Members of Order of Malta extend their warm congratulations to Fr Paul Murphy, who is a Chaplain and member of the Order of Malta, on the announcement that he is to receive one of the highest military awards from the Irish Defence Forces, a distinguished service medal in honour in recognition of his courage and exemplary service.
As reported in the media, Fr Murphy demonstrated exceptional bravery during a knife attack while serving as an Army chaplain, placing himself in harm’s way in the course of his pastoral duty to others. His actions reflect the highest traditions of service, moral courage, and selfless commitment to the welfare of those entrusted to his care.
Fr Murphy’s ministry embodies values that resonate deeply with the ethos of the Order of Malta: steadfast service, compassion under pressure, and fidelity to duty. We are proud to count him among our Chaplains and give thanks for his continued service to the Defence Forces, to our organisation, and to the wider community.
We also extend our contratulations to Privates Shanahan and Geraghty, and Cpl Padden who’s collective actions exemplify the very highest standards of Óglaigh na hÉireann.
The Order of Malta warmly acknowledges this well-deserved recognition and offers Fr Murphy and his colleagues our sincere congratulations, prayers, and good wishes.
