Order of Malta Launches Christmas Appeal for Holy Family Hospital, Bethlehem The Birthplace of Hope
November 14, 2025The Order of Malta warmly congratulates Fr Paul Murphy, a dedicated member and Chaplain of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, on receiving the Óglaigh na hÉireann Values Award—a distinction reserved for those who exemplify the very highest standards of courage, service, and integrity.
Fr Paul was recognised by the Irish Defence Forces for displaying exceptional moral and physical courage, loyalty, and respect in the aftermath of a horrific personal attack in Galway and throughout his subsequent tour of duty in Lebanon. The citation notes that his “actions and words following a traumatic personal attack provided strength and comfort to personnel, families and colleagues, exemplifying the highest standards of service, compassion and leadership.”
This honour reflects not only his professionalism as a Defence Forces chaplain but also his steadfast fidelity to the Order’s mission tuitio fidei et obsequium pauperum — the defence of the faith and service to the poor. His contribution stands firmly within the 850-year tradition of the Order of Malta here in Ireland and embodies the values we continue to champion across all our works all over the world.
In the accompanying photograph, Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy and guest speaker Jonathan Shackleton, cousin of the famed Arctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, joined Fr Paul at the presentation of the award.
On behalf of the Irish Association, we extend our sincere congratulations and deep appreciation to Fr Paul as he continues his distinguished ministry.
Ad multos annos, Fr Paul.
