After some uncertainty, now that the Israeli government and cabinet have agreed to the ceasefire, there is hope that after more than a year of war in Gaza, the violence will come to an end. Attacks are due to cease from Sunday, but our partner in Gaza is seeing an increase in heavy attacks and gunfire as hostilities draw to a close.

Since the war began in October 2023, tens of thousands of people have lost their lives, around two million people have been displaced, large parts of the infrastructure have been destroyed, and Israelis are still being held hostage in Gaza. A ceasefire would now make it possible to rebuild the Gaza Strip.

Together with the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem and in close coordination with the headquarters of the Order of Malta in Rome, our partners in Malteser International have been supporting the people of Gaza with essential food supplies and are now preparing to provide medical care for the people of northern Gaza.

Fr. Gabriel Romanelli, Parish Priest of the Holy Family Church in Gaza, shares:
“Although a ceasefire seems imminent, these days have been incredibly tough, with continuous bombings making nights particularly hard. However, the hope of a ceasefire provides people with the possibility to restart, rebuild, and enjoy simple pleasures like going to the sea.”

Let’s keep the people of Gaza and the Holy Land in our prayers. 🙏
