April 14, 2025The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) is deeply honoured that the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mrs Emma Blain, selected the Order’s 850th commemorative stamp as the official gift presented to the Mayor of Rome, Mr Roberto Gualtieri, during her visit to Rome last week.
The commemorative stamp, issued to mark the 850th anniversary of the Order’s establishment in Ireland, symbolises the enduring historical ties between the Order of Malta in Ireland, and the city of Dublin. The Order’s first Grand Priory in Ireland and the Island’s earliest recorded hospital were founded in 1174 at what is now the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, a site of significant heritage in Dublin’s and Irish history.
The Lord Mayor’s choice of this distinguished emblem underscores the shared legacy of the Order and the city of Dublin, as well as the deep-rooted connections between Dublin and Rome. The Sovereign Military Order of Malta welcomes this recognition of our historic presence and ongoing humanitarian mission, and we remain committed to strengthening our longstanding relationships in Ireland and internationally.
